Meet the impactiive® Team: Gerry Lanigan

Senior Banker,

Mr. Lanigan has been involved in Financial Services for over 40 years. His career started in branch banking (1973), working for AIB in Dublin, Ireland. However, automation / computerization (as it was known) was in its infancy and he was selected for this new department.  Mr. Lanigan left AIB as a Senior Manager in 1996, having had direct exposure to the key technology disruptions that emerged during that period for Financial Services. By then AIB was an international bank and he was managing an integrated voice and data network supporting Capital Markets, online banking, ATMs, and Credit Card Services in the UK, Poland, and Ireland.

After AIB, Mr. Lanigan held a Resident Advisor Role in Tbilisi, Georgia, reporting to the President of the Central Bank and in cooperation with representatives from the IMF, the World Bank, and the EU in an economic reform program for Georgia. Over the next five years, the Central Bank was restructured from rural to central operations, RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) was introduced, SWIFT payments were supported by all commercial banks, and Capital Markets transactions had commenced.

Mr. Lanigan then became the Business Development Manager for Alphyra (now Payzone), which required establishing relationships with mobile telephone operators, banks, and suppliers in pursuit of a strategy aimed at developing pan-European payments capability in Ireland, UK, Sweden, Holland, Germany, and France.

For nearly a decade following Payzone, Mr. Lanigan became an independent management consultant who provided strategic support on payment strategies, payment systems, payment regulations, and payments processing – all of which have been front and centre of Gerry’s work for more than 20 years. During this time, he worked in and with Central Banks, large commercial banks, microfinance institutions and payment processors.

Mr. Lanigan then joined FINCA International as the Head of Operations Development, where he oversaw the development and implementation of DFS strategies for FINCA regions in Africa, Latin America, Eurasia, and the Middle East. This included the selection, development, and implementation of a range of delivery channels and services which underpin FINCA’s development and growth as a full Financial Services institution.

Currently, and since this time, Mr. Lanigan has returned to the world of independent management consultancy, providing advisory support to institutions such as MISFA Afghanistan, FINCA LAC (Guatemala & Honduras), amongst other activities.

Mr. Lanigan holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the Irish Management Institute and a Diploma in International Relations from Staffordshire University (England).
